Case Study: A Tough Claim a Long Way from Home

A global technology client sustained a pollution-related loss at a major subcontractor in Korea. Initially, the issue was how to coordinate the claim from the U.S. without the client physically going to Korea. A larger problem arose when we learned the carrier was going to deny the claim due to a pollution exclusion in the policy.

Marsh immediately put together a claims team, which included the Branch Manager and Claims Consultant in Marsh's Korea office. The staff at Marsh Korea participated in the initial investigation of the loss and provided the Marsh U.S. office with a full description of the loss, what had happened, and included photos of the damage. Our Korea staff also coordinated subsequent visits by claims adjusters to the loss site for additional investigation.

Marsh successfully argued that the loss was the result of a covered peril (explosion) in the policy. The claim, in excess of $1,000,000, was ultimately paid by the insurance company.
