Political Unrest Continues in Thailand

Political unrest continues in some areas of Thailand, although the Thai government declared it was back in control.

In an effort to keep civilians safe, government officials closed schools and embassies, declared public holidays for May 17 and 18, and enforced a dawn-to-dusk curfew for 24 provinces until Sunday.

Marsh Risk Consulting (MRC) recommend that companies with interests in Thailand review their business continuity management (BCM) and crisis management programs to ensure that they have adequate coverage – and are prepared to activate their BCM procedures at any time. The primary objective is to have the shortest recovery time possible to stabilize and protect life, property, the environment, corporate reputation, economic viability, brand identity, and consumer trust.

Property owners should also consider terrorism and political violence insurance to cover potential losses and liabilities that might occur due to terrorist and political activities.  Coverage can be specifically tailored to address many of the risks concerning businesses and property owners, including:

  • Property and/or business interruption due to terrorism
  • Strikes, riots and civil commotion
  • Terrorism general liability and/or terrorism employers’ liability
  • Lenders’ interests for losses resulting from terrorist acts
  • War on land
  • Aviation hull war
  • Contingent hull war

Marsh continues to discuss the situation in Thailand with clients to ensure they understand the specifics of their policy cover.  Marsh Thailand colleagues stand ready to assist, and are available by mobile phone and email.
