An unusually early snowstorm hit the northeastern United States October 29 and 30, leaving millions of homes and businesses without power and affecting air and ground transportation throughout the region.
More than 2 million customers were still without electricity as of Monday, October 31; utilities warned that some outages could remain for several days. Air traffic has largely returned to normal, but pileups of snow—more than 2 feet fell in parts of the northeast—may continue to hamper rail systems.
